Most skin lesions (lumps and bumps) are benign (not cancerous). However, skin cancer
should be detected and removed as early as possible. Any new bump, changing spot or
non-healing ulcer on the skin should be looked at without delay. Early detection and
treatment can get rid of most skin cancers without leaving a trace.
Benign (non-cancerous) skin lesions such as naevi (moles), seborrheic keratosis and
papillomas (warts) can be removed in the office under local anesthesia for cosmetic
purposes. The procedure is painless and there is no downtime associated with it. There
are typically no scars visible once the wound has healed.
Chalazions (styes) can also be removed in the office when lasting more than 2 weeks and
when there is no improvement with warm compresses applied twice a day for 10
minutes. Although there is no downtime associated with chalazion removal, minor
eyelid bruising lasting about a week is possible.
Patients normally need to return for a follow-up visit at 4-6 weeks, at which time a
Triamcinolone (steroid) injection is sometimes given to make any residual inflammation
disappear completely.
