Corneal neurotization CENTER FOR FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY AT ENT SPECIALISTS

Corneal neurotization

Corneal neurotization is a surgical procedure performed to restore corneal sensation and improve eye health in individuals with corneal nerve damage or loss. It involves the transfer of a sensory nerve from a nearby part of the face, typically the supraorbital nerve or the sural nerve, to the cornea. The donor nerve is carefully connected to the damaged cornea to provide sensory innervation and restore corneal sensitivity.

Corneal sensation is crucial for maintaining the health and integrity of the cornea, which is the clear, front surface of the eye. When corneal nerves are damaged or absent, it can lead to corneal ulcers, decreased tear production, and potential vision loss. Corneal neurotization aims to prevent these complications by restoring corneal sensitivity and promoting corneal healing.

The procedure requires meticulous surgical technique and post-operative care to ensure successful nerve regeneration and corneal recovery. Corneal neurotization can be an effective treatment for patients with neurotrophic keratitis (corneal ulceration from loss of sensation), helping to improve their ocular health and visual outcomes.

RECOVERY & RESULTS

Most patients take between 7 and 10 days off after a corneal neurotization surgery. Stitches dissolve or are removed at 10 days. Antibiotic and pain medication may be prescribed for a few days. Strenuous activity, especially swimming, Yoga, Pilates, tennis and weightlifting should be avoided for six weeks. Walking is allowed the day after surgery. Running and biking can be resumed after 3 weeks. The hair can be dyed after one month. Makeup can be applied as early as 2 weeks after surgery.

Dr Georgescu will see you the following day to make sure you are comfortable and healing appropriately. You can shower the day after surgery. However, we recommend using distilled water to wash the hair and the face for at least a week. You will also be seen on day 7, 10 and 14 followed by 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. However, Dr Georgescu is available to see you at any time if you have questions or concerns.
